While I have 40 or so drafts tucked away in WordPress, none of them are quite ready to be sent off on their own onto the Internet. So, I went about seeking the topic for my next blog post. I looked up entertainment news, felt a lack of inspiration.
Then I looked up “nerd writing prompts blog” and “geek writing prompts blog” on our friendly giant known as Google.
There are countless writing prompts for blogs. Even if I only used WordPress’s Daily Prompt, or Blogher’s NaBloPoMo daily prompts, or one of the various fiction series prompts, like Friday Fictioneers or Writing Prompt Wednesday, there are enough blog prompts to keep a writer busy while traveling to Mars and back (with current technology, that’s between 300-500 days. Some prototypes could cut that down to around 100).
However, I have yet to find a prompt list specifically for geektastic and nerdtastic purposes. So, in case someone else is looking for the same thing, I hereby offer the following prompts:
- What would you do to entertain yourself during a trip to Mars (or another planet)?
- Choose two sci-fi/fantasy/comic book franchises and debate which one is best. (This prompt is potentially endless)
- Or, choose two sci-fi/fantasy/comic book characters and compare. Funk’s House of Geekery has a fun series on DC vs. Marvel characters
- Also, there is the eternal debate of which Star Trek captain is the best.
- You suddenly have a time travel device. When do you go to? Why?
- You can change one point in time in history. What would it be? What ramifications would it have?
- You are the founder of a space station. Take the reader on a tour. What would be the rules, amenities, living quarters, etc be like?
- You are given the choice between a dinosaur and a spaceship. Which one would you choose and why?
- What sci-fi/fantasy books, movies, or TV shows most influence you? (Here’s an example from Hugo Award winner John Scalzi’s blog Whatever)
- What subgenre of sci-fi/fantasy are you most drawn to? Why?

Steampunk is awesome, but not my favorite. I just thought this picture was cool.
- If you were in a zombie apocalypse, what would be your weapon, who would you try to save, and what would be the safest structure to be in?
- While discussing zombies is fun, I’m much more passionate about dinosaurs and spaceships. For someone who is passionate, I recommend Jack Flacco’s blog.
- If you were in a High Fantasy setting, what would your class, job, and weapon of choice (for inevitable action and adventure) be?
- If you could live in a fictional world, which would it be and why?
- Would you buy the next generation of smart phone technology as a cybernetic implant?
- Which video game would be the most fun as a virtual reality?
- Which system of magic is the best? What system of magic would you want to use?
- If you were stranded in an alternate dimension, what would three things would you want to have with you?
- The age old question: What is the difference between a nerd and a geek?
If you know of a great nerdy/geeky list of writing prompts, have a quick answer to any of the prompts, or have any prompts of your own to add, please share in the comments below.
SIDE NOTE:
Just cause this is amazing.
These are great! The next time I’m at a loss for blog fodder, I’ll use one of these. What fun.
Glad you enjoyed them. I’ll look forward to what you come up with.
Wow. These are (and I am) certainly nerdtastic. Will play with a few.
Awesome. I hope you have fun.
Awesome! Thanks for making this. I can also apply this to my blog at some point. Also, Lavar Burton = Reading Rainbow. Always.
Your welcome. I look forward to what you’ll come up with.
Fun post! I’m actually always on the lookout for good writing prompts — I’m in charge of providing monthly writing prompts for my writers society, so I may borrow a few of these 🙂
Feel free. Sharing makes a lot of things more fun.
A Buzzfeed quiz once told me I would be best suited to live in that elf village in Lord of the Rings (and, yes, I can’t quite remember the name of it). But I don’t know. It is a beautiful place, but those elves seem so ding dang serious all the time. At least Hobbits and Trolls knock back a few drinks and have a few laughs, right?
It’s amazing what we can learn about ourselves through online quizzes. Also, I’d rather chill with Hobbits than elves. At least Hobbits know how to throw a party.
Agreed. And I wouldn’t mind living in a (scaled up) version of a Hobbit house, either.
